Dear Patients and Friends,
School is back in session. That means the streets will be busier in the mornings and the evenings again. Kids today are immersed in technology. They are plugged in and tuned out to the world around them. Texting, listening to music, selfies or on tweeter. They are, for the most part, oblivious to traffic and other hazards. You need to be more diligent and aware of them when driving.
The most amazing machine in the history of the ‘natural’ world is the HUMAN BODY. Here’s why I’m telling you that in this newsletter. If you were to purchase this machine (if that were even possible, which it is not) it would cost you billions of dollars. I know you may have a lot of money, but you’re still not a Bill Gates, or Warren Buffett. In fact, that would be more money than you’ll ever have (most likely). But let’s say you borrowed it from your local bank. Once you brought that human body home, you would treat it reverently because of the cost, wouldn’t you?
However, even though it’d be special and valuable… your body you now have is still something you most likely take for granted, and pay ‘little attention’ to until you develop what we call symptoms.
I want to remind you of its spectacular abilities. I want you to think about what would happen if there was some interference to your nervous system (the system that controls all your bodily functions on a daily basis) and how important those functions are to you!!! Make sure you get checked on a regular basis. It might save you some pain.

TIME TO HEAL
One of the first questions a lot of my patients ask me about chiropractic is: “How long is this going to take me to heal up doc?” This is a good question, but just let me say this.
Some drug treatments are prescribed for a lifetime. Things like diabetic drugs and blood pressure drugs. When you are given the prescription, the medical doctor usually says, “You’re going to be on these the rest of your life.”
Now let me say something about your healthcare and chiropractic. I don’t want you to expect me to UNDO years of dis-ease in a single visit. You might feel better in one visit, but I want you to know, I’m not the one that does the real healing. Your body is the healer. Symptoms always come last and disappear first.
I’ll try to tell you how long it might take before you achieve maximum correction, but if you really want to make a change in your life, you’ll want to stay under some kind of chiropractic care the rest of your life. Kind of like brushing your teeth. You just do it.
The latest research shows that 18 months is a bare minimum, but once you’ve reached that stage, things really change internally. You’re going to be feeling a lot better after a few weeks or even days, but if you’re looking for long lasting benefits, you’ll need to have an adjustment regularly for the rest of your life.
Your long term care at this office is based on three things:
- I’ll look at your objective findings, and your diagnostic findings, and then…
- I’ll use my experience with other patients who’ve had similar nerve interference patterns.
- Then I’ll consider those characteristics that are unique to you, including your age, how long you’ve had your nerve interference, your general health history, genetic factors, emotional stress, job activities, exercise regimen, water intake, weight and your diet.
The real SECRET is to be “patient with your care”. Work with me and be very honest about how you feel about your care. The better your doctor/patient interaction with me, the better your healing experience.
“Our fear of death is like our fear that summer will be short, but when we have had our swing of pleasure, our fill of fruit, and our swelter of heat, we say we have had our day.“

In memory of our fallen this and every September 11th; may God bless each of them. We will never forget our lost children of freedom.
Who Are You If You’re Born This Month?
Classified as ‘perfectionists’, people born in the month of September are extremely hard working. They are detail-oriented and organized and are almost perfect in whatever they do.
Their only problem is that they like to point out other people’s mistakes and criticize them even for trivial matters. Otherwise, they are calm and composed individuals and generally excel in the professions such as medicine, law, teaching, writing and designing.
Stress and Belly Fat
I have a little science lesson for you about your “belly fat” hormone, also known as cortisol. Cortisol is a hormone that your body releases to deal with stress, and unfortunately high levels of cortisol have been linked to increased levels of abdominal fat.
Want to reduce cortisol and burn more belly flab? Here are 3 things that you can do starting today:
1. Work less – New research shows that if you work more than 48 hours per week, the likelihood of consuming excess alcohol goes up dramatically. Alcohol consumption increases cortisol, and together they both increase belly fat. If you’re looking to shrink your belly, trimming back your working hours while choosing calorie-burning exercise for stress relief (in lieu of alcohol) will do wonders for your waistline.
2. Don’t consume caffeine after 6PM – Although caffeinated beverages can enhance fat-burning when consumed around exercise, caffeine can be a double whammy on cortisol levels, especially if consumed at night when it’s very likely to negatively affect the quality of your sleep. Getting quality, uninterrupted sleep each night is critical to reducing cortisol, so you’ll want to avoid caffeine in the evening hours.
3. Take time to “unplug” – A recent Canadian study showed that those who were constantly “plugged in” to technology all throughout the day (TV, smart phones, computers) were significantly more stressed than those who took time to “unplug” during designated time blocks each day. More stress = more belly fat, so if you want a trim belly start planning some device-free time each day.

Why Instant Rice May Be Healthier Than Regular Rice
You probably already know that, generally speaking, brown rice is a healthier option than white rice. It contains more fiber, vitamins and minerals while also having a lower glycemic index.
You’ve probably also heard that the “slow cook” version of brown rice is much healthier than the “instant” versions, which have been pre-cooked to allow for faster cooking times. After all, anything that’s “easy” has to give you some sort of health trade off, doesn’t it? So perhaps like many looking to obtain a trim, tight waistline, you labor over the stove for 45 mins to prepare your healthy brown rice.
But alas, this simply isn’t true. Did you know that many brands of “instant” brown rice contain just as much fiber as regular brown rice and have even been tested to have a lower glycemic index than regular versions? In fact, the ONLY brands of brown rice to score a glycemic index in the 40’s are ALL instant! The regular versions generally score in the 60 – 80s range.
Now, with that said, this same “quick cook” phenomenon doesn’t apply to other foods like oatmeal, where the glycemic index generally increases significantly when comparing instant versions vs their regular counterparts.
But when it comes to brown rice, it seems that there is little negative trade off and actually some positive benefits to gain with a lower glyce mic index. Not to mention, it’s ready in a few minutes instead of nearly an hour!
