October Healing Hands Newsletter

healing-hands

Dear Patient,
I think one of the hardest things for me to do is find something to write in this part of the newsletter. I guess I could talk about Halloween and sugar, and I might do that later in this newsletter but for right now I just want you to know that the real reason I write this is not because it’s easy but it’s the right thing to do. I don’t know how many people, professional business people stay in contact with you, but I do it because I care.

What I’m trying to do with this newsletter is to inform and inspire you on a monthly basis with all things décor, both for living and for being the healthiest person you can.

I have taken the liberty of signing you up for this newsletter because of our previous connection. If you ever want to unsubscribe, just let me know, but I had to tell you the reasons I’m writing you on a monthly basis.

Whether you are planning to improve your life in any way, there will be something in here for you every month. At least that’s my goal by writing you this newsletter. I know its October and that means the kids will be out and about, but you know what? Things are different now than they were when I was trick or treating. We used to get bags of candy, and be able to run from door to door and people were always ready to give something to us. Now it seems like very few kids get out in numbers. I don’t know if you celebrate and contribute, but it’s something that little children love to do, and it’s a part of their growing up. If they do go trick or treating, watch them, be with them and make sure they’re safe. Also make sure they don’t eat too much candy. It’s easy when people are handing it out.

Here’s some of the things you can celebrate in October:

  • Adopt a Shelter Dog Month
  • Apple Jack Month
  • Computer Learning Month
  • Cookie Month
  • Domestic Violence Awareness Month
  • Lupus Awareness Month
  • National Diabetes Month
  • National Pizza Month
  • National Vegetarian Month
  • National Popcorn Popping Month

Now if that’s not enough, let me give you some weekly things you can do that probably won’t cost you and arm and a leg to do, and might make a good impression on someone you know.

  • Week 1 Get Organized Week
  • Week 2 Customer Service Week
  • Week 3 Fire Prevention Week
  • Week 4 Pet Peeve Week

Effects of Consuming Too Much Sugar

I had to do it. I wasn’t sure if I was going to write anything about sugar but I couldn’t help myself. READ THIS PLEASE:

Dr. Robert Lustig, a professor of Clinical Pediatrics in the Division of Endocrinology in the University of California and a pioneer in decoding sugar metabolism, says that “your body can safely metabolize six teaspoons of added sugar per day.”

That’s six teaspoons ONLY. Don’t ever forget that number. If you drink a can of Coke, you’re over your limit. Check labels and make sure you stay under that six teaspoon limit per day if you want to limit your body’s diseases.

But — since most Americans are consuming over three times that amount, or more, the majority of the excess sugar becomes metabolized into body fat – leading to all the debilitating chronic metabolic diseases many people are struggling with. That’s right, if you eat too much sugar, you’re going to most likely have more disease.

Here are some of the effects that consuming too much sugar has on your health and something you should consider if you’re trying to look good again and not weight so much:

  • It overloads and damages your liver. The effects of too much sugar or fructose can be likened to the effects of alcohol. All the fructose you eat gets shuttled to the only organ that has the transporter for it: your liver. This severely taxes and overloads your liver, leading to potential liver damage.

  • It tricks your body into gaining weight and affects your insulin and leptin signaling.Fructose fools your metabolism by turning off your body’s appetite-control system. Wow that means you won’t know when you’ve had too much to eat. It fails to stimulate insulin, which in turn fails to suppress ghrelin, or “the hunger hormone,” which then fails to stimulate leptin or “the satiety hormone.” This causes you to eat more and develop insulin resistance
  • It causes metabolic dysfunction.Eating too much sugar causes a barrage of symptoms known as classic metabolic syndrome. These include weight gain, abdominal obesity, decreased HDL and increased LDL, elevated blood sugar, elevated triglycerides, and high blood pressure.
  • It increases your uric acid levels.High uric acid levels are a risk factor for heart and kidney disease. In fact, the connection between fructose, metabolic syndrome, and your uric acid is now so clear that your uric acid level can now be used as a marker for fructose toxicity.

According to the latest research, the safest range of uric acid is between 3 to 5.5 milligrams per deciliter. If your uric acid level is higher than this, then it’s clear that you are at risk to the negative health impacts of fructose.

Sugar Increases Your Risk of Disease

One of the most severe effects of eating too much sugar is its potential to wreak havoc on your liver, leading to a condition known as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). This is really bad. You may not think so – but it is.

Yes, the same disease that you can get from excessive alcohol intake can also be caused by excessive sugar (fructose) intake. Dr. Lustig explained the three similarities between alcohol and fructose: 2

  • Your liver metabolizes alcohol the same way as sugar, as both serve as substrates for converting dietary carbohydrate into fat. This promotes insulin resistance, fatty liver, and dyslipidemia (abnormal fat levels in your blood)
  • Fructose undergoes the “Maillard reaction” with proteins. This causes superoxide free radicals to form, resulting in inflammation – a condition that can be also caused by acetaldehyde, a metabolite of ethanol
  • Fructose can directly and indirectly stimulate the brain’s “hedonic pathway,”creating habituation and dependence, the same way that ethanol does. Your best bet. Avoid sugar at all costs. If you can cut out the six teaspoons, then do it. If you want to talk to me more about this, CALL NOW!

Ok so what do you do about it? The holidays are coming, starting with Halloween. You know you buy candy for the kids but you will end up eating the leftovers. Then Thanksgiving, then Christmas, then New Years……and you wonder where those 10-15 pounds came from?

As I tell you every month, you have a solution! We have metabolic weight loss (not diet) programs and Red Light fat loss technology

Breaking News…Breaking News…Breaking News…Breaking News…

September 2016:

UltraSlim Cold Light® is the only non-invasive procedure approved by FDA for immediate fat loss.  All other non-surgical fat loss technologies require weeks or months to achieve the results that UltraSlim achieves at one treatment visit.

Older, less effective technologies kill fat cells with “apoptosis” caused by extreme cold (like CoolSculpting®), extreme heat (like SculpSure®), or ultrasound cavitation (like  UltraShape®) that take weeks or months to see results.

UltraSlim Cold Light® gets immediate results using the natural bodily function called “lipolysis” to release stored fat energy in only the targeted area, without affecting other fat cells.  For example, patients can lose belly fat without losing fat in their breasts.

CALL TODAY TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT 489-2628

Lose inches of fat before the holidays!!

Lose 2, 3, 4 inches or more of pure fat, in about 32 minutes, using this technology. Lose fat inches off those traditionally difficult areas such as your stomach, upper arms, legs, thighs, chin, or smooth out cellulite, etc. We have also upgraded the red light programs with a new Ketone supplement to enhance fat burning and weight loss.

If you want to lose weight, one of the best things you can

do is…eat garlic fries.

It’s true!

Okay, there is one small catch…These fries are not made from potatoes.
They’re made from my favorite secret carb substitute.

Sometimes it makes sense to skip heavy, calorie-dense side dishes like rice, pasta, or potatoes. And this Secret Superfood is the ideal stand in.

I’m talking about Cauliflower.

Now if you’re not a cauliflower fan, don’t panic. I wasn’t either. But I found some recipes that transform cauliflower into a sinfully delicious taste treat. It feels like you’re cheating, but you’re not.

Why cauliflower is a power food when you’re trying to slim down.

1) Its cruciferous. Like broccoli, brussels sprouts, and cabbage, cauliflower is a cruciferous vegetable. And when it comes to weight management (and especially pesky belly fat), cruciferous vegetables are king.1

In fact – studies have shown that two of the phytochemical compounds in cruciferous vegetables, indole-3-carbinol and Calcium D-glucarate, may help your body manage belly fat more efficiently.2

2) It’s low-calorie. Super low-calorie, in fact. A whole head clocks in at less than 200 calories3…and will fill you up WAY more than 4 Oreos,4 a scoop of ice cream,5 or a serving of mashed potatoes.

And honestly, I can’t think of anyone who can eat a whole cauliflower in one sitting – it’s a lot of food.

3) It’s high in fiber. A single cup of cauliflower contains a whopping 2.5 grams of fiber…or 10% of your total daily intake.

And fiber’s important for a couple of reasons:

  1. The more fiber you eat, the less you’ll eat. A study published in Nutrition Reviews found that people who increased their daily fiber intake ate 10% fewer calories…every single day.6
  2. Fiber keeps you full. Scientists have been studying the link between fiber and fullness for years, and they’ve found that fiber-rich foods like cauliflower just fill you up faster – and keep you full longer, to resist cravings.7

4) It’s the PERFECT carb substitute. You can steam it and mash it like potatoes, or make cauliflower “rice” to serve alongside stir-fries. I’ve even made a cauliflower “risotto” before.

Ingredients

  • 1 medium head of cauliflower, separated into small florets
  • ¼ cup extra virgin olive oil (use as little as you can)
  • 1/8-1/4 cup Parmesan cheese
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 4 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 sprig of rosemary, leaves only, minced

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 450.
  2. Add cauliflower florets, olive oil, salt and pepper, and pepper flakes to a large bowl and toss well to combine. Every floret should have a light coating of olive oil – add a little more if needed.
  3. Pour cauliflower onto a sheet pan in a single layer, and roast in the middle of the oven for 15-20 minutes, or until beginning to brown. Stir, and cook an additional 10 minutes.
  4. Continue to stir/flip the cauliflower until browned all over, then add the garlic, rosemary, and Parmesan.
  5. Cook for 3-5 minutes more, until cheese is melted and garlic is fragrant, then serve! I also like to add a pinch of red pepper flakes to give it a little kick. But if you’re not a fan of spicy foods, just leave those pepper flakes out of this recipe!

PROOF… that chiropractic treatment

helps ‘migraine sufferers’

Seventy-two per cent of migraine sufferers in a clinical trial experienced either ‘substantial’ or ‘noticeable’ improvement after a period of chiropractic treatment, defying historical skepticism of chiropractics by some medical practitioners.

I had a patient ask me about her migraines the other day and I wanted to address that in this issue of my newsletter. Here’s what I’ve found that you might not know.

There was a randomized clinical trial that was undertaken by a Dr. Peter Tuchin, a chiropractor for the past 20 years, as part of his recently-completed PhD thesis at Macquarie University.

Here’s what he had to say. “Around 22 per cent [of patients] had substantial reduction – which means that more than 60 percent of their symptoms reduced during the course of the treatment,” Tuchin says.

“What makes this a really strong result is that this was a really chronic group – the average length of time they’d had migraines was 18 years. To get a change of that sort of magnitude in a really chronic group was quite amazing.

“Another 50 per cent had quite noticeable improvement.

They either found that the frequency of the migraines was less, the length of time they had them was less or that they didn’t need to use their medications as much.

This last result is very significant because some of the migraine medications are very strong drugs which have lots of side effects. Some of the migraine medications also have the problem of giving instant relief to the migraine, but creating another ‘rebound migraine’ the next day.”

The trial used 123 migraine sufferers, whittled down from around 1,000 who applied after seeing a television program about the research. This group was divided into a treatment group who received chiropractic care, and a control group who were told they were receiving a form of electrical physical therapy.

“Both groups kept a record of their migraines for the whole six months, noting down how often they got them, how severe they were, how long they lasted, and if there was anything they could think of that contributed to them,” Tuchin explains.

Despite this study, some medical practitioners still dispute the ability of chiropractic care to help migraine sufferers.

However, Tuchin believes this is a fast-diminishing group.

“I think the vast majority of medical practitioners are now open to chiropractic, but there’s a very small percentage who don’t realize what developments we’ve had, what inroads we’ve made,” Tuchin says.

“Chiropractic is not the be all and end all, but for a good percentage of migraine sufferers – the neck is a significant contributing factor, and for them chiropractic treatment is really effective. I’m not saying that everybody’s going to be cured, but there’s very little to lose.”

If you have headaches and you haven’t told me that yet, please tell me. If your headaches get worse, also let me know that. I only want the best treatment for you, and so it’s important that you communicate that to me as often as necessary.

RED LIGHT UPDATE

red-light

As many of you have been reading, we have brought in new fat loss technology. Many of you have taken advantage of this technology to lose fat inches off your stomach, upper arms, legs, thighs, chin, or smooth out cellulite, etc. We have also upgraded the red light programs with a new Ketone supplement to enhance fat burning and weight loss.

I know there are some of you who can’t understand how just laying down for 32 minutes, can eliminate 1-2 or even up to 6 inches of body fat in one session. It seems too easy.

How it works: By exposing your fat cells to certain red frequencies of light, they are energetically stimulated to release their fat content. The fat is then eliminated, naturally, through your lymphatic system, processed by your liver and excreted through the kidneys and intestines. Diet and Exercise are recommended but not mandatory. Unlike most other fat elimination techniques, such as lipo suction, cryo contour or hot laser, this does not damage your fat cells or surrounding tissue. There is no pain or bruising. You can go back to work immediately with no downtime. This fat loss can be permanent,  if you follow some commonsense dietary rules (like skipping the chicken wings and beer).

Our FDA cleared device uses exclusive LED technology that is not available anywhere else in this region and is more powerful than any other similar technology. In fact, we can basically guarantee fat loss with one session. It is typical for someone to lose 1-2 inches of fat in 32 minutes.

Remember, there is no downtime, bruising, pain, no tissue damage.

SEPTEMBER JOKES

A visitor from Holland was chatting with his American friend and was jokingly explaining about the red, white and blue in the Netherlands flag.
“Our flag symbolizes our taxes,” he said. “We get red when we talk about them, white when we get our tax bill, and blue after we pay them.”
“That’s the same with us,” the American said, “only we see stars, too.”

Hugh came into the office an hour late for the third time in one week and found the boss waiting for him.
“What’s the story this time. Hugh?” he asked sarcastically. “Let’s hear a good excuse for a change.”
Hugh sighed and said, “Everything went wrong this morning. The wife decided to drive me to the harbour. She got ready in ten minutes, but then the ferry didn’t turn up. Rather than let you down, I swam across the river, ran over the mountain, borrowed a bicycle and cycled the 20 miles through the glen to this office.”
“You’ll have to do better than that. Hugh,” replied the boss, disappointed.

“No woman can be ready in ten minutes.”

Iodine

Iodine is an essential component of the thyroid hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), both of which help control how efficiently you burn calories.

“That means insufficient iodine may cause you to gain weight and feel fatigued.” So if you want to lose weight and then keep it off, this has to be a part of your weight loss program.

The earth’s soils contain varying amounts of iodine, which in turn affects the iodine content of crops, but due to the way people eat and the soil, you are not getting enough iodine in your diet.

In some regions of the world, iodine-deficient soils are common, increasing the risk of iodine deficiency among people who consume foods primarily from those areas.

Fruits and vegetables contain some iodine, but the amount varies depending on the iodine content of the soil, which nowadays is really, really low especially due to fertilizer use and irrigation practices.

Seaweed or sea vegetables are one of the best food sources of iodine, and that’s why it’s so important that you take a daily dose of sea vegetables everyday. Our Thermosea formula is high in iodine and best of all, it tastes good.

Jokes of the Month

How To Grow Strawberries

Farmer Evans was driving his John Deere tractor along the road with a trailer load of fertilizer.  Tim a little boy of eight was playing in his yard when he saw the farmer and asked, ‘What’ve you got in your trailer?’    ‘Manure,’ Farmer Evans replied.

‘What are you going to do with it?’ asked Tim.

‘Put it on my strawberries,’ answered the farmer.

Tim replied, ‘You ought to come and eat with us, we put ice-cream on our strawberries.’

Young Entrepreneur

6-year old Robert was looking at the red ripe tomatoes growing in Farmer White’s garden.  ‘I’ll give you my two pennies for that tomato,’ said Robert pointing to a beautiful, large, ripe fruit hanging on the vine.

‘No, I can’t do that,’ replied Farmer White, ‘I can get a dime for a tomato like that one.’

So Robert pointed to a smaller green tomato, ‘Will you take two pennies for that one?’
‘Oh, yes,’ answered the farmer, ‘I’ll give you that one for two cents.’

‘OK,’ said Robert smiling, sealing the deal by putting the coins in the Farmer White’s hand, ‘I’ll collect it in a week’s time.’

Drinking Water Can Speed Weight Loss

There is one thing your weight loss plan most certainly recommends — water. Our weight loss program helps you lose weight fast, but I wanted you to know that water, (especially pH water) is very important to your weight loss efforts.

From the veggie-based Ornish diet to steak-loving Atkins (and virtually all diets in between) “drink lots of water” is part of the mantra. We don’t use either, as our weight loss plan is unique, but water is a part of any good, reasonable weight loss management plan.

And lately, there is some scientific evidence that H2O really does help you lose weight. Researchers in Germany report that water consumption increases the rate at which people burn calories. The impact is modest and the findings are preliminary, but the researchers say their study could have important implications for weight-control programs.

Eight Glasses a Day

Despite the fact that most “diets” call for drinking at least eight, 8-ounce glasses of water a day, few studies have been done to determine if the practice actually speeds weight loss.

In an effort to answer this question, Michael Boschmann, MD, and colleagues from Berlin’s Franz-Volhard Clinical Research Center tracked energy expenditures among seven men and seven women who were healthy and not overweight.

After drinking approximately 17 ounces of water, the subjects’ metabolic rates — or the rate at which calories are burned — increased by 30% for both men and women. The increases occurred within 10 minutes of water consumption and reached a maximum after about 30 to 40 minutes. I recommend you drink at least 17 ounces of pH water every 30 minutes and find out what happens to your weight. Do that for at least a month, then tell me your results.

The study also showed that the increase in metabolic rate differed in men and women. In men, burning more fat fueled the increase in metabolism, whereas in women, an increased breakdown of carbohydrates caused the increase in metabolism seen.

The researchers estimate that over the course of a year, a person who increases his water consumption by 1.5 liters a day (that’s about four 12 oz. glasses) would burn an extra 17,400 calories, for a weight loss of approximately five pounds. They note that up to 40% of the increase in calorie burning is caused by the body’s attempt to heat the ingested water. The findings are reported in the December issue of The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism.

HOW TO LOWER BLOOD PRESSURE

WITHOUT MEDICATION

What if I told you there’s a device that can lower your blood pressure, build strength, and help you relax…and you can buy it at a local store for less than $3.00?

I know what you’re thinking, “That’s impossible.”

But I’m sure you’re wondering what it is. Well get ready, because I think it’s going to surprise you. In fact, you might already have one! It is…

A tennis ball.

Amazing, right? A simple tennis ball can do all that, and I’m going to tell you how.

This Tennis Ball Tip is great for relieving stress, lowering your blood pressure, and building strength. And it came from a very unlikely place.

THE BIG SQUEEZE
Back in the 1970’s, a doctor named Ronald Wiley invented a device to keep F-16 jet fighter pilots from losing consciousness.

It was a hand-grip device. And they discovered an interesting side-effect: after prolonged use, the pilots’ resting blood pressure was lower.

The device is now available to people with high blood pressure, and according to the Harvard Heart Letter, “It has been shown to lower blood pressure as much as a first-line anti-hypertension drug.” However, you can get similar results just by squeezing a tennis ball.

STEP 1
Pick up the tennis ball, wrapping your fingers around the ball.

STEP 2
Squeeze the ball and hold the squeeze for at least 5 seconds. Relax your grip for 2 seconds, and repeat 10 times.

STEP 3
Rest 5 seconds and do 10 more repetitions with the same hand.

STEP 4
Repeat the sequence using your other hand.

That’s it. Along with lowering your blood pressure, it’s a great stress reliever AND it builds strength in your forearm and grip.

[DR. B’s TIP: If the ball is too hard to squeeze, poke a hole in it.]

RED LIGHT IN A NUTSHELL

Red Light Fat Loss…How Does It Work

So many people call and enquire about the Red Light treatment for fat loss but cannot seem to understand its simple principles. So I am going to try to explain it a little further.

We use an American-made, FDA-cleared red light system to remove fat and reduce inches without invasive surgery. There are no needles, no incisions, no pain, no bruising and no recovery time.

fat cellsOur patented technology is based on modulating a specific type of red light to trick the mitochondria (energy producers) in the nucleus of the fat cell into creating a transitory pore in the cell membrane, allowing the fatty acids and triglycerides to escape into the interstitial space. This is not laser, infrared or any of the other less effective light approaches to fat reduction.

The liberated fat cell contents are then drained by the lymphatic system and processed by the liver as part of the body’s natural detoxification. The pore in the fat cell will close in about 48-72 hours and the liberated contents will be expelled in the patient’s stool and urine, or metabolized over the next few days.

LED Red Light operates at the cellular level and does not generate heat as part of the action mechanism, but is instead part of an extremely complex, cascading photochemical mechanism.

Completely non-invasive, red light technologies have never shown any recorded side effects and patients do not experience any discomfort during the treatments. As an added benefit, the modulated red light also delivers tighter and smoother skin by adding new collagen and elastin.

Red Light different than other alternatives?

Our patented technology delivers better results than surgery, and without the dangers and downtime.

  • Immediate results without diet or exercise, patients permanently lose an average of 3.4″ of total fat at the very first session
  • Lose more fat than with surgery — more than one liter at the first session!

Dear Patient,
I always have fun at the office during June, and I love helping people just like you. Another reason I love June is because of Father’s Day, which is the third Sunday of the month. There’s a couple of other things going on, and I’ve listed what I could remember so you don’t forget. Let me know if there’s anything that I can do to IMPROVE the office. A lot of times I get so busy with patients, I forget some little things, but I like to pay attention to details, so like I said, if I’ve done something that you want to comment on, just send me an email, or give one of the staff members a note. I’ll address it as soon as possible. Thanks again.

  • 6        D Day, WWII.
  • 6        Ramadan begins.
  • 14      Flag Day.

Thought Provoking Questions

  If you could go back in time, once, and change a single thing – what would it be?

  If you had a year left to live, what would you achieve over the next 12 months?

  If you could ask for one wish, what would it be?

  What do you “owe” yourself?

  When you think of your home, what immediately comes to mind?

  How do you spend the majority of your free time? Why?

  What did you want to be when you were a kid?

What is Plantar Fasciitis?

I don’t know if you know what that is, so I’m going to explain it to you today.

Plantar fasciitis causes pain in the bottom of the heel, or as most people would say, pain in the foot. The plantar fascia is a thin, web-like ligament that connects your heel to the front of your foot. So simply put, you have pain in a ligament in your foot. This ligament supports the arch of your foot and helps you walk.

Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common complaints people have when you’re talking about foot pain. Your plantar fascia ligaments experience a lot of wear and tear in your daily life, especially if you’re on your feet a lot at work. Normally, these ligaments act as shock absorbers, supporting the arch of the foot, but here’s what happens a lot of the time.

You have too much pressure on your feet and this pressure can damage or tear the ligaments we’re talking about. The plantar fascia ligament then becomes inflamed, and the inflammation (which is always bad no matter where it’s located) causes you to have heel pain and stiffness.

So What Are the Symptoms of Plantar Fasciitis?

Great question. The major complaint of those people with plantar fasciitis is pain and stiffness in the bottom of their heel, although some people experience pain at the bottom mid-foot area.

This pain develops gradually over time. You probably don’t go to bed and then just wake up with it.

It usually affects just one foot, but it can affect both feet.

Some people describe the pain as dull, while others experience a sharp pain, and some feel a burning or ache on the bottom of the foot extending outward from the heel.

At the office we’ve found that the pain is usually worse in the morning when you take your first steps out of bed, or if you’ve been sitting or lying down for a while. Climbing stairs can be very difficult for you… due to heel stiffness.

After prolonged activity, the pain can flare up due to increased inflammation. Pain isn’t usually felt during the activity but rather just after stopping.

What Causes Plantar Fasciitis?

Here’s something to think about. You’re at a greater risk of developing plantar fasciitis if you’re overweight or obese. Why? This is due to the increased pressure on your plantar fascia ligaments, especially if you have sudden weight gain.

Women who are pregnant often experience bouts of plantar fasciitis, particularly during late pregnancy.

But get this. If you’re a long-distance runner, you’re most likely not overweight, but you may be more likely to developwoman with facitis plantar fascia problems. You’re also at risk if you have a very active job that involves being on your feet often, such as a factory worker or a restaurant server.

Active men and women between the ages of 40 and 70 are at the highest risk for developing plantar fasciitis. It’s also slightly more common in women than men.

If you have foot problems, such as very high arches or very flat feet, you may develop plantar fasciitis. Tight achilles tendons, which are the tendons attaching your calf muscles to your heels, may also result in plantar fascia pain. Simply wearing shoes with soft soles and poor arch support can also result in plantar fasciitis. Be careful what kind of shoes you wear. They do make a difference.

Here’s where you can get heel spurs. Plantar fasciitis isn’t typically the result of heel spurs. A heel spur is a hook of bone that can form on the heel bone, or calcaneus, of the foot. One out of every 10 people has a heel spur, but only one out of 20 people with heel spurs experience pain. Want help? CALL my office now!

DOCTOR’S OFFICE HUMOR

As the doctor leaned in to check her eyes, the older patient got a little frisky. “You remind me of my third husband,” she said coyly. “Third husband?” the doctor asked. “How many have you had?” “Two.” — Pennsylvania

A patient announced she had good news … and bad news. “The medicine for my earache worked,” she said. “What’s the bad news?” the doctor asked. “It tasted awful.” Since she was feeling better, he didn’t have the heart to tell her they’re called eardrops for a reason. — Los Angeles

FAT LOSS TIPS

If you want to get a flat belly fast, you MUST eat plenty of fat.  At the same time, not just any fat will do…some fats are no good at all, while others are health-boosting and fat-burning rock stars!  …

1. Avocados – Avocados are rich in monounsaturated fats as well as loads of vitamins to boot (E, K and C to mention just a few).  Not only that, but they pack a serious fiber punch, 5 grams in just a small half cup!  Between the fiber and healthy fat content, you’ll have no problem staying full for hours after enjoying a delicious avocado.  Makes for a great snack, side dish with dinner, addition to salads, and of course there’s always guacamole!

2. Eggs – Eggs are a great source of fat as well as high quality protein, just make sure you don’t skip out on the yolk!  Why?  The yolk is by far the most nutritious part of the egg, providing over 11 vitamins and minerals including nearly 100% of the daily RDI of energy-boosting B12 from just 3 eggs daily.  They are a great breakfast item, but of course they can be enjoyed at any time of day!

3. Coconut oil – Coconut oil is one of the richest sources of perhaps the most beneficial fat known to man, medium chain triglycerides (MCTs).  MCTs have been shown to improve brain function, lower cholesterol, improve skin and hair health, and best of all:  burn more fat!

We have a product called Keto/os that contains all the benefits of coconut oils.

Combine all three in an omelet for breakfast and you’ll be well on your way to feeling full and burning fat for the rest of the day!

Obesity, Spinal Problems, Arthritis and Disc Disease

In the past I have discussed the relationship between obesity and cancer, as well as other health issues. Many of you have taken my advice regarding weight loss and have called to hear more about what we offer. I would like to add one more, closer to home for my patients.  Arthritis, degenerative disc disease and joint pain are all associated with excess body weight.  Additional weight on spinal joints, hips, knees and feet can contribute to premature wear and tear on these structures.

What can you do about this?

Step 1:

Exercise: Exercising has two purposes. First it raises the metabolic rate and allows for weight loss and toning of muscles. Second, it helps maintain the normal function of joints. Although it isn’t essential for a weight loss program, moderate exercise can be beneficial in slowing the degenerative process and maintaining joint lubrication.

Step 2:

I have a metabolic weight loss program designed to help you lose weight safely and quickly. Our patient’s routinely lose ½ to a pound per day without starving.  It concentrates on fat loss, not muscle or organ loss and increases your energy levels. You are taught to eat real food, not prepackaged meals and you are weaned off the need for “sweet” thus eliminating your addictive need for sugars (a major point of sabotaging permanent weight loss).

Step 3:

 LED RED Light Therapy

Imagine laying down, spending 34 minutes relaxing, then getting up and finding out you’ve lost 2 inches or so of fat around your waist. Our patients have done this time and again in their introductory session. Our Red Light Program blends science and physiology to allow you get healthier and lose inches off of those hard to reach places like the waist, belly, chin, thighs and upper arms. The Red Light Fat Loss Program can treat all the areas on the body that are resistant to diet and exercise. Specific wavelengths of light stimulate fat cells to release their fat. You then metabolize the fat or eliminate fat naturally through the lymphatic system, liver and kidneys. We have even added whole body vibration to this program to make this easy and immediate.

For current patients we have a special offer: Your intro visit to try the LED FAT LOSS TECNOLOGY is Only $59 ($395 Value). If you love the results, I have special patient discounted packages just for you! This is an exclusive offer. Only for our regular active patients. Others will have to pay $99 for the introductory session. This has to be  a limited offer so first come first serve. It may be withdrawn at anytime.

Healing Hands Newsletter – May 2016

Posted on by Courtney Rubin in Uncategorized Comments Off on Healing Hands Newsletter – May 2016

Healing hands

Dear Patients and Friends,

May is a busy month, and like I said last month, if you’re going to make some changes, start now. Here’s a few of the things that people concentrate on during the month of May. I don’t think a lot about holidays, but I wanted you to know what other people think about in terms of holidays and what they can celebrate.

The big four for me are Mother’s DAY, National Teacher’s DAY, Armed Forces DAY, and Memorial DAY. Here’s the list if you want to figure out what holidays are in the month of May.

1.   May Day

4.   Star Wars Day

5.   Cinco de Mayo

6.   National Teacher’s Day

8.   Mother’s Day – second Sunday

8.   VE Day, WW II

13.   Friday the 13th

20.   Armed Forces Day -third Saturday

24.   Victoria Day (Canada) – usually the 24th

30.   Memorial Day

QUESTION OF THE MONTH

I wanted to know this and now you know it as well:

The most popular color in the world is BLUE. The second favorite colors are RED and green, followed by orange, brown and purple. Yellow is the least favorite color, preferred by only five per cent of people. Another interesting survey finding: both men and women increasingly dislike orange as they age!

        Did you know that

  • Every day more money is printed for Monopoly than for the US Treasury.
  • The Hawaiian alphabet has 12 letters.
  • Men can read smaller print than women; Women can hear better.
  • City with the most Rolls Royce’s per capita: Hong Kong

WHY DO PEOPLE HAVE PAIN?

Great question, and here’s my answer: What happens when you’re cutting a bagel and slice your hand with a razor sharp knife? Besides all the red blood, you’ll probably feel an immediate very distinct sharp pain, followed by a longer-lasting dull ache. Eventually, both pains will go away. But what actually is pain? How do you sense it? What makes it go away?

Pain is the most common reason that people seek medical attention. But pain is actually hard to define because it’s a subjective sensation. The International Association for the Study of Pain defines it as an “unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage, or described in terms of such damage” [source: International Association for the Study of Pain].

Obviously, this definition is pretty vague. One doctor remarked that pain is whatever the patient says it is, which I have to agree with. So let’s just say that pain is a warning sensation to your brain that some type of stimulus is causing or may cause damage, and you should probably do something about it.

Pain perception, or nociception (from the Latin word for “hurt”), is the process by which something painful is relayed to the central nervous system. There are several steps in this process:

  1. Contact with stimulus — Something that can cause your pain can be mechanical (pressure, punctures and cuts) or chemical (burns).side pain
  2. Reception — A nerve ending senses the stimulus or the pain.
  3. Transmission — Your nerves send the signal to your central nervous system. The relay of information usually involves several neurons within your central nervous system.
  4. Pain center reception — Your brain receives the information for further processing and action, which means now your brain tells you that something is hurting you.

Here’s the rub. A lot of times, you’re misaligned, but your body doesn’t sense any type of pain INITIALLY. You feel great, but you’re still misaligned. You may go weeks, months, or even years and not feel a lot of pain. Maybe a little discomfort, some tight muscles, maybe a small twinge here and there, but not a lot of pain.

Then one day you’re brushing your teeth or you just WAKE UP with this pain. You don’t know why you’re having it, but you call the doctor. The smart thing to do is get your spine checked regularly to make sure that you do not have these misalignments called subluxations. Oh and any one any age can get them, even newborns, and children, so make sure your entire family is CHECKED.

How Sugar Destroys your Libido

According to the most recent Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, (DSM-5, 2013), the American Psychiatric Association’s classification and diagnostic tool, lack of desire (classified as HSDD or hypoactive sexual desire disorder, or female sexual interest/arousal disorder) and the related anxiety it causes, is the most common of women’s sexual complaints. This can include a lack of sexual desire that causes distress, disinterest, and inability to achieve orgasm when orgasm was once easy. And orgasm, when accessible, is one of the best healing tools a woman, and a couple, can use to boost her vitality and health.

We most often hear about men’s dysfunction, but women have the same issues and are also deeply affected by these problems.

3 Ways Dessert Destroys Your Desire (AKA messes up your hormones)

  1. Sugar kills testosterone. Insulin resistance, caused by a diet high in refined carbohydrates, including white flour, sugar, and alcohol, drives down testosterone in both men and women. Both sex drive and function (think erectile dysfunction, which also effects the clitoris, not just the penis) take a hit when blood sugar levels are high.
  2. Sugar saps your energy. High-glycemic carbohydrates spike your blood sugar, leading to insulin over-production to pull your blood sugar back down. The roller coaster of low then high then low blood sugar results in fatigue, which is one reason why a big pasta dinner with wine knocks you out of the mood. High sugar consumption also leads to decreased orexin, a neurotransmitter that regulates arousal and wakefulness, which leads to fatigue, which leads to snoring, rather than snogging.
  3. Sugar = stress. Sugar is the most inflammatory food around, which leads to physical stress in every aspect of your body and mind. High insulin levels will elevate cortisol, a main stress hormone. Chronic high cortisol leads to muscle break down, fat storage, and squashed libido. Not a sweet picture, right?
If one of your big desires in life is to feel juicy, sexy, and alive, then it’s time to cut the sugar, sweet one.

The bottom line is a healthy diet, full of protein, low carbohydrate and without a lot of refined white flour and sugars can have a profound effect on your life.  Weight loss (fat loss) is a problem for many of us but there is a solution.

We have the tools for you to lose those unwanted, dangerous pounds and inches of fat. Improve your health and your life. Call our office today about our Red Light Fat Loss and Metabolic Weight Loss programs.

Vitamin C’s Weight Reducing Secret!

Vitamin C helps your body make L-carnitine, an amino acid that ushers fatty acids into your body’s cells where they’re burned for energy, says lead study author Carol Johnston, Ph.D., R.D. Eat the fruit fresh, such as oranges, grapefruit, kiwi, strawberries, etc (if available).

 ***MEMORIAL DAY FACTS***

Here are some interesting facts about Memorial Day—some you may know, some you may not!

* This tradition, called “Flags In”, has been in place since 1948.

* In 2004, Washington D.C. held its first Memorial Day parade in over 60 years. This coincided with the dedication of the National World War II Memorial.

* The red poppy is a traditional symbol of Memorial Day (many veterans wear them to commemorate the day).

* Memorial Day was originally called “Decoration Day.”

* Memorial Day traditionally marks the start of summer, while Labor Day traditionally marks the end.

* “Memorial Day” did not become the holiday’s official name until 1967, when federal law declared it.

* Memorial Day was first observed on May 30, 1868.

* Memorial Day was originally created to honor Union soldiers who’d died while fighting in the Civil War. Because of this, southern states did not observe Memorial Day until after World War I, when the holiday was expanded to include soldiers from all wars.

* In 1968, Memorial Day was moved from its traditional May 30 date to the last Monday in May in order to ensure a three-day weekend.

Happy Memorial Day to you…and I want to say thank you to all the troops and families that sacrifice so much for us.

Healing Hands Newsletter – April 2016

 “Healing Hands”

Dr. Rugoff’s April Newsletter for Patients and Friends

Dear Friends and Patients,

April is a busy month, and we’re ¼ of the way through 2016, so if you’re going to make some changes, start now. I want you to be healthy and have the best year you’ve ever had… health wise – – so make sure you read this entire newsletter, then share it with your friends! I’ve tried to put something that will help everyone, in one way or another – in this newsletter. I do this because I know people want some release from life etc, or to just get away and forget about everything for a few moments. That’s what vacations are good for if you’re planning one. Just make sure you plan ahead and it’ll be a much better experience.

QUESTIONS of the MONTH

Actual Questions Asked of Librarians:

  • Do you have books here?
  • Do you have any books with photographs of dinosaurs?
  • Can you tell me why so many famous Civil War battles were fought on National Park sites?
  • Where in the library can I find a power socket for my hairdryer?

 WHY DO PEOPLE GET ALLERGIES

Great question, and here’s my answer: No one knows for sure why people become allergic to relatively harmless substances. One theory about allergies suggests that your body is hypersensitive if you’re a hypersensitive person.

For example, if you have a high sensitivity to stress, (and don’t we all) your body also reflects this sensitivity. Since your body and your mind are connected entities, this theory makes sense. I don’t know about you, but have you, or someone you know experienced so much stress that you lost or they lost weight? Well that’s how powerful your nervous system and brain are. You can drop weight easily if you’re so stressed with something going on in your life.

Stress reduction techniques designed to improve mind-body interactions are often successful in reducing this problem. The end result is a lessening of allergic symptoms in some patients.

Another theory is that an allergic reaction is an interpretation of your environment. In order to interpret, your body must first get information. The nervous system is part of this information-gathering function of the body. If your nervous system is dysfunctional, (and most peoples are unfortunately) then the information interpreted will be altered, and this makes you vulnerable to abnormal reactions like allergies.

 Can Chiropractic Help With Allergies?

Yes, it can. Since the beneficial effects of chiropractic adjustments on the nervous system are well fatiguedocumented, it’s not surprising many chiropractic patients report a reduction of allergy symptoms when treated regularly for vertebral subluxations or misalignments in their spine.  Misalignment or dysfunctional movements of vertebra can cause an irritation in their spine, which then creates an abnormal signal received by the central nervous system.  When this signal occurs along the same pathway required for the input of normal nervous system messages, the person’s body may not interrupt the information correctly. When this occurs, an allergic reaction can result.

Although scientific research shows chiropractic adjustments do not cause an improvement in all allergy cases, they’re definitely beneficial for some.  The reason for the inconsistency may be because there are a number of different causes for a patient’s hypersensitivity.  Vertebral subluxation is only one of many potential causes. If you suffer from allergies, consider chiropractic as one of your potential powerful options. My patients tell me all of the time that they notice less allergies and the associated symptoms while undergoing chiropractic care.

MARCH CELEBRITY BIRTHDAYS

-Some famous people born in April are: Debbie Reynolds, Ali MacGraw, David Eisenhower, Hans Christian Anderson, Buddy Ebsen, Sir Alec Guinness, Jack Webb, Marvin Gaye, Dana Carvey, Marlon Brando, Doris Day, Wayne Newton, Tony Orlando, Alec Baldwin, Eddie Murphy, Rick Schroder, Arthur Murray, just to name a few.

3 Quick Ways to Reduce Stress

Between meeting deadlines, making dentist appointments, and remembering to buy milk, it’s easy for anyone to get stressed – even you.  So here are three quick ways that can help you REDUCE your STRESS LEVELS.  Staying calm and peaceful no matter what is happening on the outside isn’t as hard as it might sound.  Next time your stress levels are starting to HIT critical levels, try one of these three easy de-stressing tips.

  1. Close your eyes

Take a few moments to daydream. (Don’t do this if you’re driving.)

Picture yourself laying out on the beach or simply curled up reading a favorite book. By taking your mind and thoughts away from meeting that deadline, or performing the next duty, chore, etc. you will immediately feel a sense of calmness. Try it you might like the results.

  1. Just breathe

Taking full, deep breaths is an easy way to relax. I do this at night sometimes and it puts me right to sleep. Inhale and fill your belly with the breath, and then slowly let it out. Feel your chest and your belly release each time and see if you can breathe more deeply with each breath. Do this ten times. You might not make it to ten, but try this.

  2. Relax your muscles

In this exercise, focus on slowly tensing and then relaxing your muscles. If you’re sitting at a desk, tighten your leg muscles for a few seconds and then release. Move slowly up your body, ending at your face. Or, you can begin with your face and shoulders and end at your toes.

The Difference Between Regular and Clustered Alkaline Water

Drinking water regularly has become a popular habit. Everyone, it seems, has a bottle of water with them. Since you are all drinking more water, shouldn’t you get the full benefits of hydration? You may actually be hurting yourself with the “wrong” water.

Bottled Water: Regular bottled water is very popular but may be just filtered tap water, unfiltered spring water or may even contain chemical contaminants. Typically, regular bottled water has a ph of 5 which is somewhat acidic (vinegar and soda have a ph of about 2-3). It does the job for basic hydration but when you drink a lot of it, its acidic nature can stress the Alkaline nature of your body and support inflammation in the body. It may contain chemicals and unwanted by products not conducive to a healthy lifestyle. Remember, it’s in those nasty plastic bottles and chemicals can leach into the water. Leaving bottled water steaming in a hot car should never be used, even if cooled.

Tap Water: Believe it or not tap water, in a lot of cases, is better than bottled water. It is generally a higher ph (neutral 7 or slightly above), which better supports the alkaline state of the body and is checked and treated for pathogens and other chemicals. When you consider major brands of bottled water, are just filtered tap water, why pay $2 a bottle. The down side of tap water is chlorine, fluorine, dissolved medications, as well as many chemicals that never get filtered out in the municipal system. You need to have a very good filter (reverse osmosis) to get all the residual drugs and other industrial chemicals out that are regularly dumped into the system. Although it is a better choice over many bottled waters, there is a better alternative.

Clustered Alkaline Water: The benefits of clustered alkaline water are many. It helps support the alkaline nature of the body. Less stress on the body systems means less inflammation. Inflammation is a foundation of many health issues. Inflammation has been linked to everything from heart disease to arthritis. With regular use, people report less allergies, less joint pain, better bowel function, less colds, better hydration with activity, as well as generally a better feeling of wellness. Cancer cells, viruses and many bacteria do not thrive in an alkaline environment. Your blood ph is slightly alkaline and needs to stay in a very specific ph range or you die. If your body is stressed by acidity, it needs to maintain that alkaline state. That leads to system stress throughout the body…inflammation….that is where disease happens. Weight loss is easier if your body is in a supported alkaline state. It helps release fat more easily. With all of this said, there is a quality missing from simple alkaline water. Simply alkalizing the ph of water isn’t the whole story. By “energizing” as well as alkalizing water through a magnetic or electrical field, the water becomes clustered. That means it exists in small clusters of water molecules rather than long chains of water molecules. It is easier to absorb at the cellular level and hydrates on a sub cellular level more efficiently. Regular water must first be broken into smaller molecules to get into the cell membranes and structures. Coincidentally, clustered alkaline water is similar to “healing” waters found at Lourdes France and other religious sites. These waters are naturally alkalized by ground minerals and exposed to magnetite (natural magnets) in the ground.

Weight Loss Tip

Here is a tip to help you with weight loss.

  • It seems that snacking is always the death of my diet!  I’m doing good, and then a craving comes and I cave.  Help! Do you eat spinach?  If you don’t, and your goal is to lose as much body fat as possible, then you may want to start incorporating more spinach in your diet according to a recent study performed at Sweden’s Lund University. Researchers credit the increased weight loss to an overall decrease in calorie intake as a compound in spinach stems, known as thylakoids, has been shown to reduce hunger, particularly cravings for sweets and fast food, by up to 95%!
  • Skip the soda. Diet or regular. The acidity stresses the natural alkalinity of your body. This can cause inflammation and one way the body will deal with inflammation, is to hold onto fat. Second, regular soda adds 150-250 calories or more to your day. Third, diet soda is full of artificial sweeteners, unwanted chemicals and stimulates the sweet craving in your brain. You not only have the sweet craving stimulated but your body reacts as if you ate a sugary food, even if you didn’t. This will affect blood sugar, appetite and stimulate your next craving.

Weight loss Update

We have added a new supplement to enhance your energy, fat burning metabolism and weight loss. Losing a pound a day has never been easier. This new supplement combines MCTs (medium chain triglycerides) found in coconut and a formula which puts your body in a ketosis state. This is where your body uses fat pathways (ketone bodies), not carbohydrate glucose burning for energy. You may have read how MCT has been used to help brain function, mood, brain fog, Alzheimer’s and cognitive function.  Ketone metabolism has been used by athletes to help increase energy and endurance, as well as help them keep a muscular lean body. Maintaining a state of ketosis (not the same as diabetic ketosis which is a serious condition) reduces inflammation, helps keep a steadier blood sugar level throughout the day, helps improve muscle tissue, athletic performance, moods, cognitive function and helps with weight loss.

If you would like to know more about this Ketone supplement, call the office at 518-489-2628.

Our Photonica LED Red Light device has been granted two FDA licenses specifically making it the only LED device FDA cleared for fat reduction.

Solution upon request. Enjoy

Healing Hands Newsletter – March 2016

Posted on by Courtney Rubin in Uncategorized Comments Off on Healing Hands Newsletter – March 2016

march hh

Dear ,

In this month’s March issue of my newsletter – we are going to have some fun.  A lot of fun actually. Too many people take life so seriously that they get stressed out and when you get STRESSED OUT, you have some hormonal changes that happen inside your body you might not be aware of.  March is a busy month, we’re almost ¼ of the way through 2016, so if you’re going to make some changes, do it now. I’m ready to help you make this year, the best year you’ve ever had… health wise

Saint Patrick’s DAY is March 17th.  leprechunI’m sure you’re going to celebrate it in your own way.  Here’s something you may not know.  Did You Know?  Over 34 million Americans are of Irish descent. That’s almost nine times the population of Ireland!

“Your body does not perform as a cluster of separate mechanisms,

but rather a “cascade of events” that all starts with

proper control by the nervous system.”

The nerves that travel through and control every function of your body originate at the spinal cord and their transmission CAN be disrupted if the joints of the surrounding spinal column are NOT moving properly. This disruption in biomechanical integrity combined with altered physiological function is what chiropractors call a subluxation. It is not uncommon for this office to treat a patient with mid-back pain who also suffers from irritable bowel system, a patient with a subluxated sacrum who has been unsuccessfully trying to become pregnant, or a patient with an upper back fixation and acid reflux.

MARCH CELEBRETIES

-Some famous people born in March are “James Bond” actor Daniel Craig, celebrated children’s author Dr. Seuss, actress Jessica Biel, teenage heartthrob Justin Bieber, actress Eva Mendes, basketball star Shaquille O’Neal, “Orange is the New Black” actress Lauren Prepon, tattoo artist Kat Von D, theoretical physicist Albert Einstein, reality star Rob Kardashian, “Maroon 5” front man Adam Levine, “Die Hard” star Bruce Willis, Oscar-nominee Reese Witherspoon, Lady Gaga and Grammy winner Elton John.

Doctors don’t do the healing.

Sorry to disappoint you, but me, or any other chiropractor will never fix your back. What we are able to do is restore proper motion in the joints, which relieves tension on the nerves and muscles and allows your body to do the healing that it is inherently made to do. As a chiropractor, we believe that the body is a perfect organism in its natural state, and all disease comes from a disruption in the body’s proper transmission of signals by the nerves which affects its ability to heal and to defend against disease-causing agents. I never treat disease. I assess to find which spinal levels are causing the dysfunction, and I adjust it to restore proper nerve flow so the nervous system may work as efficiently and effectively as possible.

RED LIGHT UPDATE

red light

As many of you have been reading, we have brought in new fat loss technology. Many of you have taken advantage of this technology to lose fat inches off your stomach, upper arms, legs, thighs, chin, or smooth out cellulite, etc. We have also upgraded the red light programs with a new Ketone supplement to enhance fat burning and weight loss (see above).

It Is Safe and Effective!

Exclusive Patient Offer:  If you are an active patient, you pay just $59 to try this amazing device (non patients $79).

We typically see a 1-2 inch loss of fat in an introductory session (that is equivalent to 7-12, thirty minute workouts!)

7 Fun Things to Do at Home Tonight (Besides Watch TV)

  1. Play a game.
Dust off that old game of Clue, or Trivial Pursuit, or Monopoly (ok, maybe not Monopoly unless it’s a really long night) and challenge your housemates to some good old-fashioned intellectual competition. I always forget, until I’m playing them, how much board games can bring out people’s personalities and show you new sides of people you already thought you knew. Just try not to let rivalries or hard feelings linger after the game’s over. In my house, one of our rules is that the winner always picks up the game, which tends to take the edge off gloating.
  2. Put together a puzzle.
Jigsaw puzzles, I think, are incredibly underrated. Sure, working on a puzzle may not be as immediately gratifying as say, watching a car chase, but it has a certain slow joy that is a nice antidote to the chaos of modern life. When you’re piecing together a puzzle, you can explore a bit, try different combinations, take your time. If you work on a puzzle with someone else, you’ll wind up having all kinds of conversations that you might not otherwise have had. Puzzles are like alcohol. They relax people.
  3. Have a cook-off.
Cooking is fun: competitive cooking is even more fun. Rummage through your cabinets for random, leftover ingredients, and challenge one of your housemates to a cook-off, iron-chef style. Winner gets bragging rights, everyone gets to eat something.
  4. Draw each other.
No, this doesn’t have to be some kind of sexy Titanic thing (unless you really want it to be). Some of the most fun I’ve had with friends at house parties involves just paper and pencils: turns out, drawing people you know is really, really fun. You can have one person pose and all draw that person, or just have everyone in the room draw someone else. And you don’t have to all be Da Vinci’s: having participants with a range of styles and skill levels makes the end results especially entertaining.
  1. Make something
Crafts are like Sudoku for your hands. And you don’t have to make a lifelong commitment to knitting to procure an evening’s entertainment. Try searching online for instructions for origami, or even towel art.  Or heck, just decoupage something.
  2. Bake something really difficult that you’ve never baked before.
Make dumplings. Or macaroons. Or a pie-crust from scratch. Now’s the time to try one of those notoriously hard recipes that you’ve heard takes forever. After all, you’ve got plenty of time. And, as a bonus, it makes the house warmer!
  3. Build a pillow fort.
You may think that you are too old to build a pillow fort, but you are wrong. Building pillow forts is a joy that knows no season, and when you’re an adult you don’t have to worry about your mom coming into the room and having a fit when she sees the couch standing on its side. Once your pillow fort is complete, you can sleep inside of it. Or eat macarons. Or play a board game. Or make towel art. The sky’s the limit.

ONE THING YOU CAN DO TO HELP YOU SLEEP BETTER AT NIGHT

Sleep in varying positions. Changing your sleeping position can make a huge difference in the quality of your sleep. When you go to sleep, or if you wake up in the middle of the night, make a conscious effort to follow these guidelines until it becomes habitual:

  • Keep your body in a “mid-line” position, where both your head and neck are kept roughly straight.
  • Avoid sleeping on your stomach. It’s difficult to maintain the proper position, and it is more likely to cause aches and pains. If you wish to sleep on your stomach, put your pillow under your hips instead of under your head.

Quotes of the Month

When you are up, your friends know who you are; when you are down, you know who your friends are.

St. Patrick’s Day is an enchanted time, a day to begin transforming winter’s dreams into summer’s magic.

May you make more of friends, and no enemies. May you make more money,   and lose none. May you get blessed on St. Patrick’s Day with Good Luck galore.

A best friend is like a four leaf clover: hard to find and lucky to have.

Never iron a four-leaf clover, because you don’t want to press your luck.
