Why I Never Use Off The Shelf Salad Dressings

I stop in the salad dressing aisle, not for salad dressing, but for an Italian seasoning packet that we mix with extra virgin olive oil and red wine vinegar.  Makes for a perfect, tasty, all natural salad dressing with more wholesome ingredients, much unlike the typical salad dressings that line grocery store shelves. You see, we NEVER buy bottled dressings.  They’re horrible for you, and for the most part the “all natural” versions are as well. Here are just some of the reasons why:
1. Pick up any salad dressing bottle and you’ll likely see canola oil, soybean oil, and/or vegetable oil as the main ingredients.  These oils are extremely processed, rich in inflammation-promoting Omega-6 fatty acids, and often times contain trans fats that aren’t disclosed on the label due to how processed they are.

“All-natural” salad dressing found in the refrigerated section aren’t much different.  You’ll still see these oils as the base of nearly all of those brands as well.  Why?  They’re cheap!

Also, don’t be fooled by labels that claim “Made with Extra Virgin Olive Oil”.  Sure, they’ll point that out on the front of the label because it sounds good and leads you to believe that it’s an extra virgin olive oil based dressing.  Instead, that only means that there is at least a drop of extra virgin olive oil in the bottle, and often times that’s all it has.  Flip the label over and you’ll see the same vegetable oils listed first and extra virgin olive oil way down on the list of ingredients.  Unethical? Yes.  Healthy? No. Even if it has only extra virgin olive oil, it probably isn’t real oil but counterfeit, unless they certify the olive oil as real on the label(covered this in a past newsletter).

2. More often than not, in addition to cheap, potentially harmful oils, store bought salad dressing is also loaded with sugar to boot.  Even worse, it often comes in the form of high fructose corn syrup (the absolute worst form of sugar available).  Just check the label.

3.  To round off the trifecta of horrid ingredients contained in traditional salad dressings, we have the long list of artificial additives and preservatives that often plague these products.  If you’re looking to avoid artificial chemicals in your food, simply put, you won’t have much luck with store bought salad dressing.

So the next time you are buying Weight Watchers no fat dressing or some wholesome natural brand (even Trader Joes), think, read and ask questions. Besides, even super natural dressings are sitting on the shelf for a while, in fluorescent lights. That’s why I recommend you do what we do.  Grab a seasoning packet from the store, or make your own with your own seasonings (read the labels first), mix with REAL CERTIFIED (label says its certified) extra virgin olive and vinegar, and enjoy your dressing the healthy and still very convenient way.

4th of July - Freedom

   Now for your monthly:

About the 4th of July

1. A Truly Young Nation

The average age of the Signers of the Declaration of Independence was 45. The youngest was Thomas Lynch, Jr (27) of South Carolina.  The oldest delegate was Benjamin Franklin (70) of Pennsylvania. The lead author of The Declaration, Thomas Jefferson, was 33.

2. Men of Harvard

1 out of 8 signers of the signers were educated at Harvard (7 total). Four each at William & Mary, Yale, and Princeton. George Wythe was a professor at William & Mary and one of his students was Thomas Jefferson.

3. An Act of Treason

After signing the Declaration, John Hancock remarked that Congress must now “all hang together”. Benjamin Franklin replied, “Yes, we must indeed all hang together, or most assuredly we shall all hang separately.”

4. Happy July 2nd

The initial date the resolution of independence was approved in a closed session of Congress was July 2, 1776. The next day, John Adams remarked in a letter to his wife Abigail: “The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty.”

Healing Hands Newsletter – June 2014

Posted on by Dr Jay Rugoff in Uncategorized Comments Off on Healing Hands Newsletter – June 2014

Dear Patient,

Hi, it’s June! Summer is coming…Finally!! Happy Father’s Day Dads!  June will be a great month.  Let’s go over some really cool things.

‘Slow Down Aging’ by…

Cooking…with ‘This Juice!’

Whatever you put in your pan for dinner tonight, make sure you add a few squeezes of this:  lemon juice.

Here’s what I just discovered. A new study shows that marinating meats in lemon juice — or apple cider vinegar — can help greatly reduce the production of harmful compounds linked to AGING and CHRONIC DISEASE. Yeah I like the sound of this, don’t you?

Cooking Compounds

All foods — but especially ones derived from animals — contain varying levels of compounds called: Advanced Glycation End products (AGEs).

These compounds are known to cause “inflammation” and may open the door to “faster aging”. Cooking — especially high-heat methods — increases formation of AGEs (Advanced Glycation End products).

New research suggests that marinating foods in an acidic, low-pH liquid — like “lemon juice or vinegar” — may help slow that formation down significantly. AGEs in beef were cut in half after marinating the meats for an hour — but shorter amounts of time may help these things as well.

How A.G.E. Ages You And Your Face!

Meats and full-fat cheeses contain the most AGEs, followed by pork, fish, and eggs — although even fruit, vegetables, and whole grains may contain small amounts.

Marinating your food is one way to minimize AGEs. Another option: Cook over low, moist heat. Boiling, poaching, steaming, and stewing are ALL great choices.

Friending Dad- June

“COOL FACTS” for Father’s Day

Father’s Day by the Numbers
  • This is a big day for the 66.3 million fathers in America.
  • Nearly 95 million Father’s Day cards were given last year in the United States, making Father’s Day is the fourth-largest card-sending occasion.
  • Sons and daughters send 50 percent of the Father’s Day card to their dads. Nearly 20 percent of Father’s Day cards are purchased by wives for their husbands. That leaves 30 percent of the cards which go to grandfathers, sons, brothers, uncles and “someone special.”
  • While not everyone in America is a fan of Father’s Day, 72 percent of Americans plan to celebrate or acknowledge Father’s Day.

Gifts for Father’s Day
  • Neckties are an old standby and lead the list of Father’s Day gifts. A good place to buy dad a tie or a shirt might be one of 9,189 men’s clothing stores around the country.
  • Other items high on the list of Father’s Day gifts include those items you may find in dad’s toolbox such as hammers, wrenches and screwdrivers. You could buy some of these items for dad at one of the nation’s 14,864 hardware stores or 5,795 home centers.
  • Other traditional gifts for dad such as fishing rods and golf clubs make for a happy Father’s Day for the 22,410 sporting goods stores in America.
  • More than 68 million Americans participated at a barbecue in the last year — it’s probably safe to assume many of these barbecues took place on Father’s Day.

>>>JOKE of the MONTH<<<

young man comes home and says “Dad, just got my driver’s license and would like to use the family car.” Father replies, :”O.K., son. But, first, you have to get good grades in school, keep your room clean, make sure the yard is neat, and cut your hair. Come back in a few months and then we’ll see.”

Laugher - JuneWell, several months pass and the young man comes into the house with his report card in his hand. “Dad, I got great marks on my report card. I’ve been keeping my room as neat as a pin, and the yard is always ship-shape. How about letting me use the car?”

Father replies, “That’s all true, but son you didn’t cut your hair.” Son says, “But, dad, Jesus had long hair.” Father replies, “Yes, son, you’re perfectly right. And he walked everywhere he went.”

Seven Foods that Fight Flab

One of the biggest excuses I hear for NOT eating healthy is the expense. And although it’s true that some health food is more costly than the “fake food” you will find on the $1 menu at McDonald’s, there are still LOTS of great choices—especially if you buy in bulk (at places like BJ or Sams).

Here are my top 7 low-cost foods for a flat belly: Try to buy organic versions whenever possible, but if organic doesn’t fit in your budget that’s OK. It’s important to focus on healthy choices no matter what.

1. Avocados: These little suckers are loaded with two nutrients that are KEY to killing belly fat: hunger crushing fiber (11 to 17 grams per avocado!), and monounsaturated fats, which studies have shown to actually “spot reduce” belly fat.

2. Peanut Butter: Okay, not just peanut butter, almond butter for instance, but mostly any seeds and nuts. These are the best:. Pistachios, walnuts, almonds, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, and flax seeds. Why? They keep you full and satisfied for long periods of time, and they’re stuffed with healthy, belly-burning fats and minerals.

3. Cottage Cheese: Loaded with calcium and low-fat protein, cottage cheese will keep you feeling full for long period of time while supplying the amino acids your muscles need to grow.

4. Certain Veggies: Turns out certain vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, kale, and cabbage contain special phytonutrients, such as indole-3-carbinol (I3C), which help to fight against environmental estrogens that can add belly fat. Mom was right… eat your veggies!

5. Eggs aren’t bad, they’re nutrient-dense and loaded with belly-burning protein, vitamins B6, B12, A, D, E, and K, folate, choline, lutein, calcium, iron, phosphorus, zinc, and omega-3 fatty acids. Plus, they keep you full for long periods of time. Choose eggs that come from free-range chickens. You’ll get more healthy nutrients.

6. Oatmeal: Packed with fiber and whole-grain goodness, you can’t go wrong. Just be sure to avoid the processed, high-sugar junk out there and stick to slow-cook oats. Steel cut are the best. Add a dash of cinnamon, some walnuts, berries, and a natural sweetener to taste. BAM! Good stuff.

7. Beans: Black beans, navy beans, refried beans, and lima beans all have 6 or more grams of fiber per ½ cup. Fiber can clean your system of pounds of “toxic waste” and reduce your belly bulge in a big way.

Can you find out what is unique about this paragraph?

“How quickly can you find out what is so unusual about this paragraph? It looks so ordinary that you would think that nothing is wrong with it at all, and, in fact, nothing is. But it is unusual. Why? If you study it and think about it, you may find out, but I am not going to assist you in any way. You must do it without coaching. No doubt, if you work at it for long, it will dawn on you. Who knows? Go to work and try your skill. Par is about half an hour.”

(answer below— if you cannot figure this out.)

Here are some interesting facts about Memorial Day—some you may know, some you may not!

 * This tradition, called “Flags In”, has been in place since 1948.

* In 2004, WashingtonD.C. held its first Memorial Day parade in over 60 years. This coincided with the dedication of the National World War II Memorial.

* The red poppy is a traditional symbol of Memorial Day (many veterans wear them to commemorate the day).

* Memorial Day was originally called “Decoration Day.”

* Memorial Day traditionally marks the start of summer, while Labor Day traditionally marks the end.

* “Memorial Day” did not become the holiday’s official name until 1967, when federal law declared it.

* Memorial Day was first observed on May 30, 1868.

* Memorial Day was originally created to honor Union soldiers who’d died while fighting in the Civil War. Because of this, southern states did not observe Memorial Day until after World War I, when the holiday was expanded to include soldiers from all wars.

* In 1968, Memorial Day was moved from its traditional May 30 date to the last Monday in May in order to ensure a three-day weekend.

Happy Memorial Day to you…and I want to say thank you to all the troops and families that sacrifice so much for us.

>>May Joke of the MONTH<<

“A duck goes into a furniture store and says ‘got any duck food?’ The guy at the counter says, ‘Sorry, we don’t sell duck food here’.  The little duck walks out. The next day, same duck, same guy. ‘Got any duck food?’ ‘Sorry little duck, I told you yesterday, no duck food here.’ The duck walks out. Next day, again, “got any duck food?” The guy says ‘No! we don’t sell duck food! and if you come in here again I’m gonna “nail” your feet to the floor!’ The duck walks out. Next day, duck walks in. ‘Got any nails? ‘ The guy says ‘What?… No’.  ‘…Duck says, “Got any duck food?”

Healing Takes Time

One of the first questions many patients ask is: How long is this going to take? This is a question they may not think to ask a medical doctor. Some drug treatments are prescribed for a lifetime.  As a chiropractor, we cannot be expected to UNDO years of dis-ease in a SINGLE visit. It just doesn’t work that way.

Herniated DiskDoes Your BACK HURT?

Usually a patient first comes to my office because of pain. Then we talk to them, take some x-rays and send them home for the day. The x-rays taken with a low back disc lesion will most commonly be normal, but may reveal degenerative (decay like) changes. With spinal stenosis a patient will see a narrowing of their nerve canal.

In the lower spine ten millimeters or less equals stenosis; which is a TON of pressure on your spine.

On CT scan or MRI ‘disc lesions’ are represented by herniations of varying severity, but spinal stenosis is represented by a narrowing of the bony canal in your back. It’s like squeezing a hose hard.

If you have not had a recent x-ray of your lower back, schedule one as soon as you can, as a precautionary step. Don’t wait until it’s too late to do something about your back pain, and don’t always rely upon your symptoms to tell you something is wrong. Not all your nerves are pain sensitive, so you do not have to have pain to have the problems I just discussed. Schedule your re-exam today to I can make sure you’re healthy, and not only feeling good.

Feel Full Faster!

In a recent study, people who started their day with BREAD made from barley grain felt less hungry for the next 10 hours.  I’ve found out that if you feed yourself a really high protein breakfast, like with a high protein powder and say some cinnamon and raw eggs (2 will do it) plus some almond milk, and some chia seeds, you’re not going to get hungry. I’ve tried this and it works. You only need a half a teaspoon of cinnamon though. Don’t overdo the cinnamon.

When you think of vitamin C-rich foods, you probably picture an orange. However, a ½ cup of guava contains more than TWICE that of an orange. And that’s key since folks who load up on vitamin C burn more FAT than those who rarely get vitamin C. Interesting huh?

Vitamin C’s Weight Reducing Secret!

Vitamin C helps your body make L-carnitine, an amino acid that ushers fatty acids into your body’s cells where they’re burned for energy, says lead study author Carol Johnston, Ph.D., R.D. Eat the fruit fresh (if it’s available.
