Healing Hands Newsletter for October, 2017

Healing hands

Dear Patients and Friends,

October is finally here. The weather will be cooling down, and the kids will be getting ready for Halloween. Don’t forget this one little thing when you’re handing out something at the door. The more sugar the children put into their bodies, the better their chance of getting a cold or becoming sick later. Your body does not need any kind of sugar, especially HFCS, (high fructose corn syrup) to survive and for little kiddos, you know the tiny ones… it’s even worse. Help them take care of their bodies by not allowing them to overload on sugar. Here’s what someone told me to do. Let them go out and collect their candy, etc. Then when they return home pull out a few dollars, and ask them to trade you CANDY for MONEY. If they take you up on it, take the candy to the car, and give it to someone that might take a little and not a lot. I’ve even talked to people that gave the candy to their bank. The bank employees would have it available for all their customer and they’ll remember you gave it to them. That’s what I call a WIN-WIN.

A Fact About Halloween You Do NOT Know

I don’t know about you, but there is a lot going on when it comes to Halloween. Here’s what I mean. More than 171,000,000 million Americans will celebrate Halloween this year, with seven out of ten consumers planning to hand out candy.

Total spending will most likely be far more than last year which was around $8.4 billion with a “B”, with the average consumer planning to spend $82.93 on decorations, candy, costumes and more. I don’t want to tell you this but that is a lot of money for one night with the witches and goblins.

for the Month of October and Halloween…

  • Chocolate candy bars top the list as the most popular candy for trick-or-treaters with Snickers pulling in the #1 slot.
  • Halloween was brought to North America by immigrants from Europe who would celebrate the harvest around a bonfire, share ghost stories, sing, dance and tell fortunes.
  • Wow: Tootsie Rolls were the first wrapped penny candy in America.
  • The ancient Celts began wearing masks and costumes to avoid being recognized as human during Halloween.
  • Orange and black are Halloween colors because orange is associated with the fall harvest and black is associated with darkness. Ugh!
  • Pumpkins also come in white, blue and green. Great for unique monster carvings! I’ve also seen people carve out turnips. Not sure they think they taste as good, but if you can get that big a turnip, good luck.
  • Halloween candy sales average about 2 billion dollars annually in the United States.
  • Halloween is the 2nd most commercially successful holiday, with Christmas being the first. To me Christmas is much better.

>>>JOKE of the MONTH<<<

An 80 year old couple were having problems remembering things, so they both decided to go to their doctor to get checked and make sure… nothing was wrong with them. When they arrived, they explained to the doctor about the problems they were having with their memories. After examining the couple the doctor told them that they were both… physically fit, but that they might want to start writing things down and making notes to help them remember the harder things.

The couple thanked the doctor, paid and left.

Later that night while watching TV, the older man got up from his chair and his wife asked, “Where are you going silly?” He replied, “To the kitchen.”

She asked, “Ralph, since you are headed to the kitchen, will you get me a bowl of ice cream while you’re there?” He replied, “Sure honey.” She then asked him, “Don’t you think you should write it down so you can remember?”

He said, “No, I can remember that Mary.”

She then said, “Well I would also like some fresh strawberries on top hun. You had better write that down because I know you’ll forget that if you don’t.” He said, “I can remember that. You want a bowl of ice cream with fresh strawberries.” She replied, “Well I also would like whipped cream on top of the strawberries. I know you will forget that too… so you better write it down as well.”

With irritation in his voice, he said, “Mary, I don’t need to write anything down! I can remember exactly what you just said.”

He then fumes into the kitchen. After about 20 minutes he returns from the kitchen and hands her a plate of bacon and eggs.

She stared at the plate for a moment and said angrily: “I TOLD you to write it down! You forgot my toast!”

October Quotes

Then summer fades and passes and October comes.  We’ll smell smoke then, and feel an unexpected sharpness, a thrill of nervousness, swift elation, a sense of sadness and departure.”   –   Thomas Wolfe

Count the garden by the flowers, never by the leaves that fall. Count your life with smiles and not the tears that roll. ~Anonymous

Summer makes me drowsy. Autumn makes me sing. Winter’s pretty lousy, but I hate Spring. ~ Dorothy Parker

For man, autumn is a time of harvest, of gathering together.
For nature, it is a time of sowing, of scattering abroad. ~Edwin Way Teale

 Why Is Chiropractic So Important

To the Entire Family?

I’m sure you know that if you want to be as healthy as you can be you should spend the majority of your life getting adjusted. Here’s what most people do however. They go when they hurt, and when they don’t hurt, they don’t go. They rely upon their symptoms to tell them if they’re sick or not. No symptoms means they are healthy right? That’s all wrong, but I’ll go over that in a future newsletter.

You have a cell phone don’t you? Here’s something you heard from me that you’ll want to remember. Keep the cell phone away from your body. Not just your head, every part of your body. It’s terrible and having it next to your head all the time can cause things like cancer, brain problems, etc. ( They say they’re safer..They don’t really know 100%).

Your brain is home-base for everything that happens in your body, and all the nerves in the body are the telephone lines. When you get pain, tingling, or numbness, anywhere in your body there is usually one good source of nerve irritation. That means inflammation.

When your spinal vertebrae (back bones) are misaligned this causes irritation to the nerves at that level. This then can cause muscle tension, muscle spasm, lots of bad inflammation, and pain all along that inflamed nerve. So where are those nerves going? To your finger, intestine, ear, somewhere in your head? (Nerves are everywhere but a large portion of them are NOT pain sensitive. That means you can have issues and feel great, and be symptom FREE.)

The fact that irritation is present causes dysfunction. That dysfunction can mean headaches, indigestion, tightness in your chest, sciatica, and tingling in your fingers or toes to name a few plus it can mean that you might not feel anything. If that irritation is left alone, and you say take aspirin and just cover up the symptoms… this can lead to you have a much more serious condition down the road.

Now for my point. While I believe chiropractic can help LOTS of problems, your job as my patient is to constantly challenge me! What does that mean? Let me tell you. I want you to tell me about a new (or old) problem anytime you’re in the office… so that I can help. Bring your kiddos in to get “checked out.” With all the falls and run-ins they take, their little bodies need to be working at 100% when growing up. I’ve found that most parents neglect getting their children checked. Not because they’re bad, just because they don’t think there is anything wrong.

One last point. In case I haven’t told you this before, each adjustment I give you… boosts your immune system. Here’s what happens. Your white blood cells increase in number over the next 24 hours after your adjustment. This can be crucial when you are sick or are starting to feel sick. So don’t be afraid to keep that appointment when you are sick. It may be just the boost you need to get better – quickly.

Chiropractic care at this office is more than just getting your back “cracked.” It really is a lifestyle change. I hope that you can see why it is important to use chiropractic for more than just back pain, neck pain, etc.

Stop Removing Chicken Skin,

it’s Actually Good for You

If you’re health conscious, you’ve probably heard that you should always pass on the chicken skin; while flavorful, it’s just added fat, which contributes to weight gain, higher blood pressure, and other risk factors for illness. The short of it is, chicken skin isn’t all bad for your health.

Believe it or not, there are some health benefits from eating chicken skin; this has been researched and proven by health experts from Harvard. According to their studies, the oft-feared chicken skin can actually help your heart.

What do the avocado and chicken skin have in common? Unsaturated fat.chicken

Unsaturated fat is actually beneficial to heart health because it helps to lower blood pressure as well as cholesterol, which decreases the risk of heart disease.

If you’re concerned about a huge jump in calories, don’t be. The difference between a skinless serving of chicken compared to one cooked with the skin on is around 50 calories. The flavor chicken skin adds, might even allow you to pass on excess salt, which has very real negative effects on your body.

You may also be thinking of all the grease you’ll be putting into your body. Fortunately, chicken skin actually works as a barrier.  The skin prevents excess oil from entering the meat of the chicken by absorbing it before it can soak in.

Even if you aren’t completely convinced, it’s still beneficial to cook chicken with the skin, to absorb excess oil, and then discard it before dining. Either way, if you make sure to cook your chicken in healthy oil, to begin with, you can definitely cut down on potentially harmful substances entering your body. Olive oil is a good choice.

Like everything else, moderation is the key when it comes to chicken skin. It shouldn’t be eaten in excess, but it does provide some omega-3 fats, which benefit the body. It also contains some omega-6, which can have adverse health effects. Chicken skin certainly shouldn’t be on the menu every day, but it won’t hurt, occasionally, as part of a balanced diet.
