More than half of Americans admit to experiencing back pain symptoms each year, but did you know that back pain is also one of the most common reasons for missing work?
Many Albany, NY residents spend long hours sitting at desks and staring at computer screens. This means that there is an extreme lack of movement in the neck and back muscles and extended hours of poor posture on a daily basis. Either of these can cause the muscles to become stiff and unable to provide the support needed to do their job. When this happens, the joints are more vulnerable to injury.
Visiting a chiropractor can provide relief for back pain, neck pain, and more. A spinal adjustment can help to relieve pressure, improve spinal motion, and improve your body’s physical function. Depending on your type of injury or pain, several treatments may be required for the joint to be fully restored.
In addition to working with a chiropractor, you can help protect your spine and reduce back pain at work with these tips:
Avoid Crossing Your Legs – When you sit cross-legged, it makes it difficult to keep your spine straight and your shoulder stretched. Sitting this way puts you at risk for overstretching the muscles around the pelvis and increases your risk of varicose veins by interrupting blood flow.
Keep Your Feet Grounded – Try to remember to keep your feet flat on the floor, shoulder-width apart and have your knees at 90 degrees. Doing so can prevent tension in your knees, ankles, and hips taking the strain off your back.
Choose A Good Quality Chair – You will want to select a chair that allows your lower back to rest against lumbar support. A chair with the right tilt radius and seat length can help ensure that you and your spine are comfortable throughout the day.
Take Regular Breaks – Getting up at least every hour to stand can help to reduce pressure on your spinal disks while boosting circulation. During your break do some light stretches (such as shoulder rolls) to increase circulation further.
